Day 2
Hanoi

HANOI ORIENTATION & BAT TRANG POTTERY VILLAGE (B, L)

During the morning, you start the day with a visit to the Ho Chi Minh Complex: which includes the Ho Chi Minh Museum, and his modest stilt house which provide valuable insights into the life and times of one of the most successful leaders of the 20th century. You will then visit the excellent Ethnology Museum for an overview of Vietnam's 54 distinct ethnic groups. Lunch will be served at KOTO – a restaurant belonging to a vocational training program that is changing the lives of street and disadvantaged youth in Vietnam. In the afternoon, you head to Bat Trang village – a premier ceramics centre 15 km northeast of the city centre. While the upper side is quite commercialized and focuses on glazed ceramic items, the riverside 'ancient' village leans more towards earthenware and pottery products. There’re opportunities to try your hand on making our own products, or wandering around its large ceramics market.

After lunch, just make yourself at ease and relax. We are slowly getting off the classic cruising routes, far from the usual clichés of this busy tourism spot. Limestone rock formations will parade all around us before our stop at Hon Co island, where we take a few steps up to explore the Thien Canh Son cave. Inside the cave, stalactites and stalagmite in various shapes and sizes will tell you more about geographic history of Halong bay and the surrounding area. Late in the afternoon, the boat cruises to its anchorage area. Dinner is served either inside or outside depending on weather conditions. Overnight on board in a cozy air-conditioned cabin with en-suite bathroom facilities.

A 30-minute Tai Chi session will be organized, energize your body and soul or just allow yourself some farniente time on a sunbath with a cup of coffee. Then, we hop on bamboo boats to go visiting a secluded floating village surrounded by the mountains. We trace our way between numerous floating houses and small rowing boats that serve the everyday life as vehicle, itinerant shops, fishing utility, sometimes overnight shelter. Lunch will be served while cruising back to pier. Take a last glance at the rocks, standing still as the eternal guardians of a kingdom. Disembark from the cruise; you have a private transfer from Halong to Ninh Binh. You reach Tam Coc (known as one of the most scenic spot of the region) in the late afternoon.

Sit behind your driver, relax and watch the city passing by. This tour will take you on wide avenues and narrow lanes for an alternative sightseeing of Saigon. It is a narrow lane of about 12 km going along waterways and traditional houses. Many “hellos” on the way, some stops for pictures, at crafting and rice processing workshops; and a visit of a family. Our hosts will offer us local cake and some tea. We take the time to wander around and try catching fishes in the very traditional way, using the “vo ca”. We then get back on the waters of the mighty River and cruise at easy pace along the rice fields and other agricultural scenes. We reach a local home to enjoy a home-made lunch (and the fruits we bought earlier). Follow a digestive stroll around and the visit of carpenters in their workshop.
